Govt to create ecosystem to sell fresh fish directly to urban residents

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is in the midst of formulating a strategy to create an ecosystem for fresh fish to be sold directly to urban residents.
Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the matter was still being discussed with the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), including the suggestion to create a weekend fresh fish market at high-density urban areas like the People's Housing Project (PPR) areas.
"This is because those in rural areas can easily go to the (fish landing) jetties to buy their daily supply of fish.
For the urban resident, however, they can only go to the market and the (supply and price of) fresh fish in the market are usually monopolised by middlemen."
The minister said this to reporters after opening the half-price fresh fish sales campaign organised by the LKIM in conjunction with the free health examination programme organised by UEM Group Berhad (UEM Group) at the Hiliran Ampang PPR flats here today. — Bernama
