Kampung Sampun Gerunggang, Asia Jaya declared 26th infected rabies area

KUCHING: The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) today declared Kampung Sampun Gerunggang as a new rabies-infected area.
In a statement today, Sarawak JPBN secretariat said the matter was decided by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Agricultural Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development cum chairman of the committee, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

"Considering the village is outside of the 10km radius of a rabies-infected area, the village has been declared as the 26th infected area," the secretariat said.
The secretariat said so far, 265 of 266 sample results had been received from the Veterinary Research Institute in Ipoh.
It said the samples comprised 243 dog samples, 21 cat samples, and one bat sample. From 265 case results, 53% or 20% comprising 47 dog samples and six cat samples were confirmed positive for rabies virus.
"Four of the five dog sample results were reported positive for rabies via direct fluorescent antibody test," it added.
The positive cases are from Kampung Sampun Gerunggang, Asajaya, Kota Samarahan, Batu Kawa Old Bazaar, Kuching, Institut Memandu Cangiran Sd Bhd, Matang, Kuching and No.8, Lorong 2H-2A, Taman Malihah, Matang, Kuching. — Bernama
