KUALA LUMPUR: A medical assistant at a government hospital in Pahang was sentenced to three years' jail by the High Court here today for possession of items related to the Daesh terrorist group.
Judge Datuk Mohd Sofian Abd Razak handed down the sentence on Mohd Khairul Azhar Hasan, 36, who pleaded guilty the charge.
Mohd Khairul Azhar was charged with possession or control of the Daesh-related items on his Facebook account which used the name 'Khairulazhar Hasan' last April.
He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest which was last March 12.
In the judgment, Mohd Sofian said as a public servant, Mohd Khairul Azhar should not be involved in activities that could affect peace and security in the country by giving support and views to the terrorist group on his Facebook.

"It started with sympathy for the Syrian people, the accused began donating between RM50 and RM100 a month and then began sharing news on Syria on his Facebook.
"If not stopped, it is not impossible the accused would sympathise and contribute his energy to fight together with the terrorist group," he said.
Mohd Khairul Azhar, who has four children, was charged with committing the offence at 24th Floor, Special Branch E8 Division, Bukit Aman at 12.20 pm last April 3.
He was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which provides an imprisonment for up to seven years, or fine, or forfeiture of the items concerned, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Izhanudin Alias prosecuted, while lawyer Mohd Hezri Shaharil represented Mohd Khairul Azhar. — Bernama
