KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened slightly lower against the US dollar today as investors shifted their interest towards the greenback on hopes that the United States will pass the tax-cut plan by year-end.
At 9am, the local unit was traded at 4.2350/2380 versus the US dollar from 4.2320/2350 at 6pm on Tuesday.
A dealer said news that US President Donald Trump will meet Republicans senators on the tax reform plan later today boosted investors' sentiment.
"This had affected demand for the emerging market currencies, including the ringgit," he said.
The ringgit, however, was traded mixed against other major currencies.
It strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.1055/1098 from 3.1077/1110 and was firmer against the Japanese yen at 3.7208/7238 from yesterday's close of 3.7234/7267.
The ringgit was stronger against the British pound at 5.5589/5645 from 5.5769/5826 on Tuesday but was lower against the euro at 4.9799/9839 from 4.9773/9825 yesterday. — Bernama
