Towards cleaner, greener cities

THE Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry (KeTTHA) awarded the Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) Provisional Certificate and the Diamond Recognition Award to eight municipals and universities at the recent LCCF Award ceremony. The two awards recognised recipients’ efforts and strategies in lowering carbon emission within their respective areas of work/ responsibility.
At the awards ceremony, four municipals were presented with the LCCF Provisional Certificate for completing and fulfilling the baseline assessment within their working systems, while two municipals and two universities were awarded the Diamond Recognition Award for meeting the targets in reducing their levels of carbon emission.
CALL FOR GREENER BUILDINGS
Sources in KeTTHA stated that the LCCF is a performance-based system that measures a development’s environmental impact, considering its total carbon emission. Its aim is to promote the concept of green cities in Malaysia in mitigating climate change and realising the objectives of the Green Technology Master Plan. KeTTHA Acting Deputy Minister Datuk Seri S K Devamany informed that a total of 25 municipals (including universities) have begun providing the required data on their respective “buildings” and have come out with action plans to reduce their carbon footprint.
“We hope that a minimum of 52 municipals will have taken the carbon reduction initiatives as set in the LCCF by the year 2020,” Devamany appealed on behalf of the ministry. For more information, visit KeTTHA’s website.
