GEORGE TOWN: A Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) must be set up to investigate the cause of the pre-dawn deadly bus collision which killed eight passengers and injured 33 others, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim made the call to the federal government, urging them to form this RCI soon to probe the fatalities which occurred along the North-South Expressway, near the Juru toll booth on Oct 24.
The establishment of the RCI should be under the purview of the federal government, he said.
He added that the RCI must obtain consent from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V prior to being formed.
He described the accident as a horrific crash which claimed the life of Noriah Kasa, a single mother from Parit Buntar, Perak.
The mother of three was on her way to work at a factory in Bayan Lepas.
"This is a serious accident," he said, before presenting RM1,000 in assistance to the victim's daughter, Norasyikin Zuryanidufizan, 22, in Komtar today.
Noriah and seven Indonesian factory workers died after their buses were involved in the accident on Tuesday morning.
She was pinned under the seat following the impact of the crash.
Lim said that state Welfare Committee chairperson Phee Boon Poh would also liaise with Perak welfare authorities to provide assistance to Noriah's family.
"We will do what we can," he said.
