Do expensive products really work?

IS it right for people with sensitive skin to use as many skincare products as possible?
Are expensive products definitely suitable for your skin?
Not entirely true. Consultant dermatologist Dr Peter Ch'ng from Peter Ch'ng Clinic – Skin & Laser Specialist explains on how to best choose products suitable for your skin.
There are many types of derma skincare in the market. They were introduced into the market after various experiments were conducted by skin specialists. Consumers can choose products that are suitable for their skin condition after evaluating the product ingredients and results from the research.
Ch'ng added that the price of the products does not determine its efficacy. It is important to choose products from a reputable brand. Many brands in the market label their products with ingredients such as "Organic" or "Collagen". These labels must not be used as the only factor to determine the efficacy of the product. It is better to choose the correct products which can specifically target certain skin conditions.
One common ingredient in derma skincare is Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Many consumers might relate to the word "acid" to something that can damage the skin. However, Ch'ng said that as long as the correct dosage is used, HA can help improve the skin moisture content.
"HA is one of the major components in our skin. As we age, our body's natural production of HA slows down. This can cause skin to lose moisture and can lead to increased dryness, fine lines and wrinkles," he said.
"The unique ability to hold so much water makes hyaluronic acid invaluable to our skin. It effectively plumps out the skin and by doing so it can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as make skin look smoother and nourished."
He added that the main benefit of HA is its ability to replenish moisture that is crucial to have younger looking, plump skin. Once it is applied on the skin, one would be able to see the effect in just a few hours. For instance, the skin will look smoother and nourished.
He pointed out that HA possesses anti-ageing properties. It is the number one choice for skin moisturising effect. It is suitable for oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin and so on. However, the selection of product should depend on the individual's skin condition.
Do a patch test on hand before applying it on the face
Ch'ng said that different people have different skin conditions. Some are born with dry skin, while others may have oily skin. Hence it is important to select products which are suitable for you skin condition.
He explained that if one uses a product which causes dry skin to become dryer, it would cause skin inflammation and even skin sensitivity. If one moisturises oily skin further by using an oil-base skin moisturiser, it would worsen the acne problem.
"The product chosen can be expensive, but one should stop using if it is not deemed suitable. It is better to give it away if you are reluctant to dispose the product.
"If one wishes to use the product but is unsure if it's suitable, do a patch test on the inner forearms, two times a day. After a week, one may apply it on the face if there is no adverse reaction on the hands," he suggested.
However, it is still not 100% safe because the skin on our face is thinner compared to the hand, therefore it is not guaranteed that what works on the hand can work on the face.
Wrong products can cause skin sensitivity
So what kind of products can cause skin sensitivity?
Ch'ng said it all depends on the individual.
"We need to go through various experiments before we can confirm what ingredients to avoid or what kind of products are suitable for us.
"People with sensitive skin should use as few products as possible. This is because the more products they apply on their skin, the higher the chances it would trigger irritation.
"Hence, it is advisable not to use too many products."
