GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hindu Association have criticised the 2018 Budget, tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, for failing to address to the poor segment of the society.
Its chairman P. Murugiah told theSun, people living in poverty were neglected and were not given much attention to, in this budget.
Citing examples, he said, the subsidy for market controlled-items such as cooking oil, flour, and sugar only benefits restaurants, hotels and food retailers.
He said, a stringent guideline should be drafted out to tighten regulations on subsidised items to ensure only the deserving benefit from it.
"No such regulations appears to be in place and we hope something can be done to assist the poor," he said.
"The announcement only looks good on paper, nothing has been solved," he said.
The government, yesterday announced RM3.9 billion for goods and transport subsidies including for cooking oil and gas, flour, electricity and tolls.
Murugiah added he was disappointed with the Budget tabled, and asked what will happen to the poor.
On subject of medical, he said there are a lot of poor people are on the the waiting list, to be treated.
He hoped government hospital's board will comprise of NGOs, instead of politicians.
"I strongly suggest non-governmental organisations (NGOs) representatives to sit on the board of hospitals," he said.
