GEORGE TOWN: A trader was sentenced to death by the High Court here after he was found guilty of trafficking in heroine and monoacetylmorphines.
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed passed down the sentence on Mohd Sufian Hashim, 33, after the defence failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution's case.
Mohd Sufian was charged with trafficking a total of 17.13g of heroine and monoacetylmorphines.
The offence was committed at an area in Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth at 2.20am on July 6, 2015.
He was charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and is punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act, which provides for the mandatory death sentence.
The accused's family members including his wife, who were present in court, were seen wiping their tears throughout the proceedings while the accused appeared glum in the dock.
In his judgment, Abdul Wahab said the prosecution had proven that the accused was in possession of the drugs.
"There were no reasonable grounds to say that the drugs did not belong to the accused," he said.
The deputy public prosecutor was Emma Syafawati Abdul Wahab, while the accused was represented by counsel M. Puvan.
