Lovebirds sentenced to death for drug trafficking (Updated)

ALOR STAR: A pair of lovebirds was sentenced to death by the High Court here today after they were found guilty of drug trafficking.
Judge Datuk Hashim Hamzah handed down the sentence on Mohammad Samri Hashim, 40, and Salina Dtiauddin, 32, after finding the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution case.
Hashim also sentenced the couple to 10 years' imprisonment , including 10 strokes of the cane on Muhamad Samri, after they were found guilty on the second charge of possessing drug.
On the first count, Muhamad Samri and Salina were charged with trafficking in 23.32g of heroin and 3.55g of monoacethylmorphines in a Proton Perdana car at Jalan Bukit Awi, Kulim, at 1am on March 12, 2016.
They were charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides the mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.
On the second charge, Muhamad Samri and Salina were charged with possession of 39.41g of methamphethamine at the same time and place.
The charge was made under Section 12(2)/39A (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a life sentence or imprisonment of not less than five years and minimum of 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Nor Shuhada Mohd Yatim, while both accused were represented by lawyers M. Chandran and Burhanuddin Abdul Wahid. — Bernama
