KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) received 340 complaints on various cases under the Competition Act since 2012 until October 2017, involving the imposition of penalties amounting to RM23.4 million.
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Abu Samah Shahbudin said from the number of complaints received, a lot of reports were about bid-rigging cases involving business and service tenders.
"Since January this year until October, 56 complaints were received by MyCC and 36 of them have been resolved.
"In general, knowledge of the law through the Competition Act 2010 has improved compared to since it was gazetted in 2010. Consumers are increasingly aware of this competition and report the offences to MyCC," he said.
He was met by reporters after the closing of the second edition of the 'Moot Court Competition On Competition Law 2017', by MyCC chairman Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), here, today.
The programme, organised by MyCC, involved 300 participants from IIUM, University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia , aimed at, among others, promoting understanding of the Competition Act 2010.
Abu Samah said knowledge of the Act should continuously increase to inhibit the activities of irresponsible parties in business such as controlling the prices of goods as well as monopolising the market.
At the event, UM's representative was named champion of the programme which began on Oct 28 through the quality of the debate presented on legal issues (defence and prosecution).
Abu Samah said the programme would be enhanced next year with international participation, especially from the Asean region. — Bernama
