Drug trafficker sentenced to death while another escapes gallows

GEORGE TOWN: Two drug traffickers endured different fates at the High Courts here when one of them was sentenced to death while another escaped the gallows.
In the first case, Nor Azri Izzati Rosle, 21, was sentenced to death by Judicial Commissioner Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed after the prosecution succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against her.
Nor Azri, a former saloon worker, was charged with another person who has since passed away, with trafficking 103.35g of methamphetamines at a house – No.54, Tingkat Indah 2, Taman Bukit Indah at about 10am on April 28, 2015.
She was charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act when read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
It provides the mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.

On the second charge, Nor Azri was charged with possession of 0.24g of heroin and monoacetylmorphines at the same time and place.
She was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and it is punishable under Section 12 (3) of the same Act.
The maximum penalty is a maximum jail term of five years and a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or both.
For the second charge, Abdul Wahab pronounced a sentence of 18 months imprisonment, commencing from the date of the arrest.
Nor Azli looked stunned when the sentences were passed down.
Just metres away in another High Court, it was all smiles for Meera Hussain Ahamed Basheer Khan, 39, after he was acquitted of trafficking 192.07g of methamphetamine three years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Azmi Abdullah discharged Meera Hussain from the charge after finding that the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the charge.
The accused who works as a shopping assistant was charged with trafficking methamphetamine at an apartment – No 48-2-4 Khantasamy Apartment, Jalan Trusan in Sungai Pinang at about 11.40am on Nov 28, 2014.
The charge under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 is punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act when read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
It provides the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
