ALOR STAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today was briefed on the construction of the Pokok Sena Water Treatment Plant here which is being developed by the federal government.
The half-hour briefing was delivered by Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) chief executive officer Datuk Abd Ghani Zainuddin.
Also present at the briefing were Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, state executive councillors and senior government officials.
Apart from the construction of the plant which is expected to be fully operational on Nov 15, the prime minister was also briefed on the development of treated water supply projects throughout the state.
The water treatment plant involves a total project cost of RM69 million and will benefit 54,200 consumers in the Pokok Sena district, northern part of Pendang (14,900) and Felda Bukit Tembaga (2,600).
The water treatment plant is currently in the final stage of testing and accreditation while the contractors are running tests to comply with the standards set by the Ministry of Health which involve parameters (E-coli and turbidity and also chlorine, aluminium and fluoride residues) before being supplied to consumers.
With a capacity of 30 million litres of water per day, residents no longer need to depend on the water treatment plant in Bukit Pinang, which also supplies water to residents around Alor Star.
Najib was also briefed on the upgrading project of the Kulim Hi Tech Water Treatment Plant which will also be completed this month.
The federal government has allocated a total of RM1.08 billion to Kedah in the form of loans for treated water supply development projects.
Najib, who is on a one-day working visit to Kedah, was then taken to visit the plant before heading for the 'Lawatan Kasih Sayang' event. — Bernama
