PPM seizes 204,500 cartons of cigarettes worth RM2.4 m

JOHOR BARU: Region 2 Marine Police (PPM) confiscated 204,500 cartons of smuggled cigarettes worth RM2.4 mlllion after stopping a lorry in front of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM), Tanjung Laboh, Batu Pahat, two days ago.
Its commander, ACP Paul Khiu Khon Chiang, said the seizure was carried out at about 3am after PPM monitored the shore of Tanjung Laboh, Batu Pahat and found a suspicious looking lorry.
"Based on a tip-off, PPM personnel monitored the coast and found a lorry loaded with cigarettes believed smuggled," he told reporters here today.
Khiu said PPM personnel followed the vehicle for about 800m before apprehending the driver, 41, in front of the university.
On inspection of the lorry, PPM found 204,500 cartons of cigarettes believed smuggled into the country by sea. The cigarettes valued at RM2.4 million was the largest seizure made by Region 2 PPM this year.
The cigarettes were taken to PPM Region 2 headquarters for further investigations under Section 135 (e) of the Customs Act 1967. — Bernama
