Two friends jailed, fined for impersonating as policemen to extort

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was sentenced to 12 months' jail and his labourer friend was fined RM5,000, in default 15 months' jail, for putting fear into a trader by impersonating as policemen in order to commit extortion.
Magistrate Haslinda A. Raof handed down the sentence on unemployed Mohamad Norazli Razak, 23, and Muhamat Hison Sadi, 20, after they pleaded guilty to the charge.
They were charged under Section 385 of the Penal Code with jointly committing the offence on the 36-year-old trader at the victim's apartment at Pandan Indah here at 9.30 pm last Jan 7.
According to the facts of the case, the victim and a family members had just arrived home at the apartment after sending his wife to work when the two accused, impersonating as policemen approached the trader and told him that he had committed an offence and to make some payment to settle the matter.
The victim, who was in fear, then gave the accused RM100.
Deputy public prosecutor Raihanah Abdul Razak prosecuted, while both the accused were unrepresented. — Bernama
