KUALA LUMPUR: Today was the most memorable day for the students and staff of the International School@Parkcity (ISP) as they welcomed Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, to the school to promote The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition.
The competition, managed by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883, is the world's oldest schools' international writing competition.
Attired in a light emerald green dress and white pants with an orange flower brooch, the Duchess of Cornwall arrived at the school at 10.25am and was greeted by ISP executive principal Andrew Dalton.
The Permaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, was on hand to receive the visiting Duchess of Cornwall who is accompanying her husband Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, on Their Royal Highnesses' maiden visit to Malaysia.
Camilla's visit to the ISP was the first official engagement of her Malaysian visit.
Hundreds of students waved the Malaysian and UK flags as they welcomed the Duchess of Cornwall and the Permaisuri of Johor who were presented with bouquets of flowers by two students as a mini orchestra of ISP students performed.
They then proceeded to the new sports arena where students participated in a swimming activity to celebrate the arrival of the royal visitors.
Camilla signed a plaque to commemorate the visit and officially opened the new Mawar Wing.
The Duchess of Cornwall and Permaisuri of Johor visited the primary campus and went on a tour to see Year Six students engage in creative workshops before arriving at the school library to visit the Commonwealth Essay Writing Workshop.
There, Malaysian author and writer Tash Aw, who leads the workshop for Form Six students, was introduced to the Duchess of Cornwall and the Permaisuri of Johor.
The Duchess of Cornwall and Permaisuri of Johor engaged in a round-table discussion and interacted with the students, discussing with them what they had learned and their experiences.
They also posed for a group photograph with the staff and students at the sports field, before bidding farewell.
Approached by Bernama later, Dalton said the school was privileged to have had the Duchess of Cornwall and the Permaisuri of Johor visit the school.
"We feel it's a very special day in the school's history," he said.
Opened in 2011, ISP is a British curriculum school that was built in partnership with the Brighton Education Group (UK) and Perdana Parkcity (Malaysia). It caters to an international community with students from 54 nationalities, though Malaysian students make up the majority.
Prince Charles and Camilla arrived in the Malaysian capital yesterday on an official visit to commemorate the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United Kingdom.
Their Royal Highnesses are scheduled to visit a number of places in Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Sarawak and Penang, as well as participate in various significant events over the span of seven days from Nov 2 to 8. — Bernama
