JOHOR BAHRU: Johor police recorded 143 cases of false police reports in connection with lost identity cards (MyKad) from January to September this year.
Johor Police chief Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said investigations revealed that false police reports were made to avoid being fined by the National Registration Department (NRD) for the loss of an identity card.
"Members of the public who lost their MyKad due to their own negligence are reminded not to lodge false police reports to avoid being fined by the NRD because it is an offence for which they could be prosecuted.
"This act not only wasted time but also caused inconvenience to the police and a waste of public funds as a result of investigating into cases that did not occur," he said in a statement here today.
He said those found to have lodged false police reports could be charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of six months, or a fine of RM2,000, or both upon conviction. — Bernama
