SPM and STPM will not be affected by flooding in Penang and Kedah

PETALING JAYA: The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations will not be cancelled or postponed despite the flood situation in Penang and Kedah.
"We are still assessing the situation but ideally we hope to carry out the examination on time and according to the schedule," Deputy Education minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan told theSun via text message.
He added that the Penang and Kedah state education directors have already informed all teachers and invigilators to prepare to aid all students who are sitting for the exam.
Kamalanathan emphasised that the safety of students remains a priority and that issued official instructions should be adhered to at all times.
A total of 34,672 candidates will sit for the SPM exams at 261 centres in Kedah, while 23,114 candidates will sit for it at 159 centres in Penang.
He noted that only 100 SPM candidates from SMK Mak Mandin will be moved to SM Seberang Perai.
"About 400 candidates from SMJK Jit Sin will sit for their exam in the same location, but will receive logistical assistance from the police who will transport the exam papers to the school using three pick-up trucks," he said.
The SPM exams this year will start today and end on Dec 4, with a total of 443,883 registered candidates at 3,363 exam centres throughout the country.
There are 45,303 candidates sitting for STPM 2017 (Term 3) at 683 exam centres nationwide on Nov 6, 7, 8, 9 and 14, while 50,011 candidates will sit for STPM 2018 (Term 1) on Nov 15, 16, 20, and 21, this year at 670 exam centres.
In a statement, Malaysian Examinations Syndicate (MES) Public Relations officer Khawari Idris said candidates who are unable to get to their designated examination centres, should head any centre nearest to them and report to its chief observer to sit for their examination papers for that day.
