KUALA LUMPUR: More than 230 vendors will benefit from Proton Holdings Bhd's (Proton) tie-up with China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said through the tie-up, Geely aimed to boost Proton's sales to 500,000 units annually within the next 10 years.
"The vendors' business will surely grow with Proton's sales hitting 500,000 units a year," he said in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Noor Ehsanuddin Mohd Harun Narrashid (BN-Kota Tinggi) during the question and answer session.
Proton registered sales of 72,000 units in 2016.
To a supplementary question from Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (BN-Dungun), Ahmad said Proton would not retrench its employees, instead plans were underway to increase the existing workforce to 20,000 workers over the next 10 years.
"Geely also aims to increase the number of Proton vendors and enhance their capacity in their quest to produce better quality products," he said. — Bernama
