Gerakan hopes to win 5 parliamentary, 12 state seats in GE14

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong said the party hopes to win five parliamentary and 12 state seats in the upcoming 14th general election.
"It is going to be a big challenge. Our enemies hope that we will go down even further, but I am confident that we can do better," he said during his opening speech at the party's life members council meeting at Menara PGRM, today.
Mah said Gerakan hopes to win more seats, but needs to be realistic on their target and chances of winning.
"We have a realistic chance of winning five parliamentary seats and 12 state seats, hopefully we can win more," said Mah.
He said based on a survey done after the last general election, only 15% of Chinese voters voted for the Barisan Nasional.
"I hope that number increases to 30%," he said.
In the 2004 general election, the party won 10 parliamentary seats and 30 state seats, this number dropped to eight parliamentary seats and four state seats in the 2008 general election.
In 2013, the party won one parliamentary seat and three state seats. Gerakan also won the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat in a by-election.
He also said another political party had called Gerakan a "mosquito" party.
"We may be small in numbers, only 400,000 members, but in the last 50 years, the party has fought on many issues, especially matters affecting the marginalised," he said.
