KUALA LUMPUR: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim did Malaysia proud once again when she was reelected as the president of Unesco's Intergovernmental Council of Management of Social Transformation Programme (IGC MOST) for the second term, from 2017 to 2019.
The minister said it was a great honour to be reelected to the position once again.
"For years to come, I believe there's a need to further mobilise the social and human sciences through the MOST programmes to support member states more effectively in the context-specific design and implementation of public policies for social development.
"Rest assured, I will continue to strengthen and complete all the work I have started," Rohani said following her reelection at the Extraordinary Session of IGC MOST in Paris on Saturday. Her comments were contained in a statement issued by the ministry.
Subsequently, she chaired the Extraordinary Meeting of IGC MOST in her renewed capacity as the president. The 35 IGC MOST member states include Argentina, France, Ethiopia, Cuba, Ecuador, Thailand, Turkey, Togo, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Slovakia as well as Malaysia.
In addition, Malaysia, through its ambassador and permanent delegate to Unesco Datuk Mohd Zulkifli Mohammed, has been appointed as vice-chairperson of the Social and Human Sciences (SHS) Commission of the 39th Session of General Conference (GC) of Unesco.
The SHS Commission is one of six commissions of the GC.
Unesco, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, is a specialised agency of the United Nations based in Paris. — Bernama
