Local and Indonesian duo charged with attempt to commit terrorist act

KUALA LUMPUR: A factory technician was charged with attempting to go to Syria with intention to commit a terrorist act while a paddy farmer from Indonesia was charged with possessing pictures and videos relating to the Islamic State.
Mohamad Awang, 41, was charged with attempting to go to Syria through Tehran with the intention to commit terrorism in Syria, at a High Court, today.
Awang is alleged to have committed the act at Crystal Crown Hotel at No. 3, Jalan Jambu Mawar, Jalan Kepong Utama, at about noon at Feb 21, 2017.
The charge is under section 130JA of the Penal Code, is punishable to a term up to 30 years and shall be fined, upon conviction.
Anwar, 28, who is from West Jawa was charged with the possession of 17 pictures and four videos containing terrorist elements and related to Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in a hand phone.
He is alleged to have committed the act at the same, date and place.
The charge is under section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code and it is punishable with seven years or with a fine, if convicted.
Muhammad Fadzlan Mohd Noor asked for a mention date.
High Court judge Datuk Azman Abdullah advised both the accused to engage a lawyer or get help from Legal Aid Bureau for a lawyer, especially to Awang, who is facing 30 years jail sentence, if convicted.
The case is fixed for a mention on Dec 7, 2017.
