KUALA LUMPUR: Police will not compromise with anyone attempting to set upon policemen carrying out crime prevention duties, said Datuk Mazlan Lazim.
The city police chief said police viewed seriously the attack on its officers on anti-illegal gambling rounds by a group of Chinese-nationals last Saturday.
The attack by the 68 foreigners forced police to open fire in self defence during the incident in Jalan Abraham, near Pudu here.
"The possible motive behind the incident could be a communication breakdown due to their language barriers.
"We will take stern action as they attacked our personnel who were trying to carry out their duties. The suspects did something not appropriate which is hindering personnel from carrying out their duty.
"These are the challenges we face and we cannot allow them to attack the police," he told reporters after attending KL police contingent monthly assembly here today.
Mazlan said they rounded up 68 Chinese nationals but subsequently released 60.
Among the eight detained include two women.
"Most of them who were arrested and screened were working in a construction site nearby and they possess valid work permits," he added.
Meanwhile, on a separate matter, Mazlan said city police will initiate operations to combat drug abuse in the city especially around People's Housing Project (PPR) developments.
He said the operation includes stationing an officer at every PPR development in the city to look into the narcotics activities.
