RM10k fine for lorry owner and driver for trying to bribe RTD officer

IPOH: The Sessions Court here fined a lorry owner and the driver RM10,000 each, in default four months jail, and jailed one week for trying to bribe a Road Transport Department officer after they pleaded guilty to a traffic offence committed three years ago.
S. Moorthy, 51, the owner and V. Kumar, 57, claimed trial when they were jointly charged on May 12, 2017.
Today all the parties entered a plea bargain before judge S. Indera Nehru handed down the sentence.
She also ordered the one-week prison term to commence from today.
The case was heard behind closed doors.
DPP Nurul Wahida Jalaludin from MACC prosecuted while T. Ellanggovan appeared for Moorthy and Manjeet Kaur represented Kumar.
The accused were charged with offering RM600 to RTD assistant enforcement officer Azlee Ahmad at Jalan Ipoh-Lumut here on Nov 12, 2014 at 10.30am.
The money was an inducement for the officer not to take action against the overloaded lorry.
The offence was committed under the Road Transport Act 1987 and Land Public Transport Act 2012.
They were charged under Section 17 (b) and Section 24 of the MACC Act 2009.
