KUALA LUMPUR: It is costing Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) RM250 million annually to manage waste in the federal capital, said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Tan Sri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz.
He said this encompassed among others waste collection and sending the collected waste to the Bukit Tagar waste disposal centre in Selangor.
"Daily 2,500 to 3,000 tonnes of waste are transported to Bukit Tagar and for each tonne, DBKL has to spend about RM100.
"If there is greater awareness among city folk to manage their waste well, savings of up to RM50 million can be made annually which can used to implement other beneficial programmes," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after launching Alam Flora Sdn Bhd's 1 Supervisor 1 Transformation Area (1S1T) programme here today.
The programme is an initiative to get all city folks on board to keep KL clean and green. — Bernama
