KUALA LUMPUR: More than 50 leading companies in the telecommunication, property and plantation sectors were found to have been avoided paying taxes, Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim claimed.
He said, more shockingly, 20 of the companies were known to have unpaid taxes totalling RM1 billion.
"So, I want to know what are the mechanisms being formulated by the Finance Ministry to tackle this massive tax evasion and how far the monitoring activities are being implemented to tackle the issue?" he said when debating on the Supply Bill 2018 at the committee stage for Finance Ministry at Dewan Rakyat sitting today.
In another development, Irmohizam congratulated 24 companies which had received the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Malaysia Award for their active involvement in helping the public through various forms of aid and assistance.
Irmohizam also proposed to the government to provide tax reliefs to companies which were active in CSR programmes. — Bernama
