LABUAN: Police raided two family entertainment outlets in downtown Labuan on Tuesday for running an illegal gambling operation and seized 81 gambling machines worth of RM270,000 and RM9,470 cash.
Eight caretakers, five men and one woman, aged between 19 and 23, were also rounded up along with 22 patrons, aged between 22 and 62.
The joint operation from the Labuan and Sabah criminal investigation department, called "Ops Dadu" was carried out at 9.20pm, as part efforts by the police to wipe out gambling activities in Labuan and the country.
Labuan police chief ACP Adzhar Othman said 38 computer sets that had been modified, 43 sets of simulator machines and 366 token coupons were seized as evidence of their involvement in gambling.
"All of them will be brought to court for remand order under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code which allows the detention of suspects for more than 24 hours for police to complete their investigation. We can also revoke the licence of such operators," he said.
Adzhar stressed that action could be taken against patrons under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and offenders face a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both. — Bernama
