TAWAU: The Tawau Marine Police detained a man attempting to smuggle 24 cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 13 sacks of used clothing and shoes in the waters off Kampung Titingan, popularly called Ice Box, here last night.
Sabah Region 4 Marine Police commander ACP Mohd Yazib Abdul Aziz said the 35-year old skipper was caught at about 8.30 pm when the police were carrying out an operation dubbed 'Maharlika Interpol'.
He said it was believed that the suspect wanted to smuggle the goods to Indonesia.
"An inspection of the speedboat revealed 12 MyGaz LPG cylinders, 12 Petronas LPG cylinders and some used items. The controlled items were being smuggled to Indonesia without a permit," he said in a statement here today.
Mohd Yazib said the boat operator, who only had a temporary identity card, failed to present a valid document or letter to carry the goods.
"The total value of the seized goods as well as the speedboat and outboard engine is estimated to be RM50,560," he said, adding that all the goods had been brought to the Tawau Marine Police Base. – Bernama
