KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has been asked to consider renewing the supply contract for Koperasi Serbaguna Sanya Sdn Bhd (Kosan) for another 10 years from 2018 to enable the underprivileged Sabahan children statewide to continue enjoying the free distribution of school shoes and uniforms.
Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail (BN-Pantai Manis) when making the call said that since the contract ended this year, Kosan workers had also been badly affected.
"Kosan has given jobs to no less than 400 workers at its factories in Papar and Tuaran, as well as at its headquarters in Likas.
"These factories (in Papar and Tuaran) has been supplying school shoes and uniforms not only to students in primary schools, but also secondary schools in Sabah," he said when debating the State Budget 2018 at the State Assembly sitting here today.
Abdul Rahim said Kosan had also been very thrifty in spending the limited allocation it received over the past three years following the rising cost of operation and the implementation of minimum wage policy.
He said with its limited budget, the company still managed to pull through and helped the government in distributing aid and assistance to the people, especially the underprivileged and those in rural and remote areas.
"If the contract was not renewed, the factories will not be able to continue production and the workers might lose their source of income," he said. – Bernama
