PYEONGCHANG (South Korea): The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will incorporate a 'chilling' zest of the future as South Korea introduces humanoid robots to provide a variety of services at these events.
The organiser's Head of International Media Relations, Lee Ji Hye, said the high-technology facilities were some of the highlights, where robots would be utilised for public relations activities, information services, torch relay, and porter and other services.
"As part of high-tech services the world has never experienced, you will also see robots at the airport to provide guest-receiving services," she said at a media briefing for 40 international journalists in conjunction with the two-day Korean Press Institute journalism conference held last week.
As a giant manufacturer of cars, electrical appliances and smart phones, South Korea would offer, for the first time ever, 5G telecommunications services at the games, she said.
"We will also provide real-experience services, including 5G buses, 360 degrees of virtual reality programmes, glass-free three-dimension applications and holograms," she added.
PyeongChang, located in the eastern part of South Korea and about 126km from Seoul, will host the Olympic games with the 'Passion. Connected' slogan from Feb 9 to 25, while the Paralympic Games will be held from Mar 9 to 18.
Lee said the development facilities for the games were coming up on schedule and added that the Olympic Games would witness 6,500 athletes and officials and the Paralympic Games, 1,500 athletes and officials.
On transportation, she said, PyeongChang was accessible via high-speed railway and an express road network.
She said tickets were available for booking at http//tickets.PyeongChang2018.com. — Bernama
