KUALA LUMPUR: There are enough government agencies for the public to check and verify if their personal data has been breached, said Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Jailani Johari (pix).
He said within his ministry itself there is the Personal Data Protection Department (PDPD) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
He urged members of the public to check with government agencies if they feel that there has been a breach in their personal data
"The main problem is Malaysians like to share their information and photographs on social media, and this can lead to a breach in their personal data," he told reporters after opening the World Access And Interconnect Forum 2017 here today.
Johari said it was not necessary, when was asked if there was a need for the government to set up an official portal to help the public confirm if their personal information had been leaked online, similar to the sayakenahack.com website created by a tech blogger.
He said MCMC, the country's internet regulator, and news verification website Sebenarnya.my was sufficient to address cyber security concerns.
It was recently reported that the data of more than 46 million mobile users in Malaysia had been leaked as far back as 2014.
He urged members of the public who feel that they have fallen victims to scams, to lodge reports with the police and Bank Negara Malaysia.
"My ministry takes a multi-agency approach when dealing with such issues as the main duty of the government is to safeguard the public," Johari said.
