LANGKAWI: The World Conference on Exercise Medicine (WCEM) today adopted a resolution called "Langkawi Declaration on Exercise Medicine" (LDEM), a global action plan for combating non- communicable diseases (NCDs).
The resolution, among others, is to set standards and global protocols for the safe and ethical practice and promotion of exercise as part of medicine.
It is also to develop training methodologies and contemporary scientific and evidence-based curriculum for the training of exercise therapists and exercise physiologists, according to the 10-point resolution.
The resolution also calls for engagement with corporations and the government sector to combine resources in implementing grassroots educational empowerment programmes using exercise medicine towards enhancing community wellness and combating the issue of NCD prevalence.
The three-day conference which ends today, gathers exercise scientists, physicians, therapists and coaches from 25 nations to deliberate on exercise medicine, which is increasingly gaining acceptance among Malaysians.

Experts shared research findings on the conclusive evidence which confirms that exercise in prescribed form has a positive impact in reducing the effects of NCDs.
Exercise therapy is a regimen or plan of physical activities designed and prescribed for specific therapeutic goals.
It is also used to restore normal musculoskeletal function or to reduce pain caused by diseases or injuries. — Bernama
