Female ride-sharing driver nabbed for string of thefts

GEORGE TOWN: A female ride-sharing driver was detained yesterday over her alleged involvement in a series of theft cases at the Al Malik Khalid Mosque of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here.

Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the 38-year-old single mother was picked up at 6pm by the university's security department before she was handed over to the police.

He said further investigations revealed that the suspect had also been involved in theft cases at the Penang Hospital (HPP).

"The woman operated on her own and targeted the USM mosque and HPP surau to steal handbags and valuables of female members of the congregation while performing their prayers.

"Based on police investigations, the woman, who has four children, aged seven to 17, was involved in at least 20 theft cases at the mosque and surau," he said here today.

Anuar said the suspect, who tested positive for drugs, was being remanded until Friday. — Bernama
