PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry has taken a new approach in announcing the UPSR examination results nationwide, by including three non-academic reports as well.
Stating that the major shift is part of the ministry’s effort to ensure a more holistic and fulfilling assessment for Primary School students throughout their six years, Education Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Amin Senin said students will receive four reports in total including classroom assessment, sports, physical and co-curriculum assessment, psychometric assessment and UPSR results.
While students with special needs and learning disabilities will be evaluated using the Primary School Alternative Assessment (PASR) instead of UPSR.
He said the selection of students into full boarding schools is now fully dependent on the results of all four reports instead of only UPSR.
“The ministry’s new approach no longer emphasises on how many As the students secure, but how they perform in the other aspects as well.
“This is the ministry’s effort to focus on character building and creating value-added learning in schools,” he told reporters during the announcement of the
2017 PSAR results nationwide at the ministry, here, today.
In an attempt to ensure less pressure on students and teachers to focus on academics, Amin also announced that UPSR examinations results will no longer be announced based on states and the achievement of schools.
"The achievement levels of the 2017 UPSR candidates focus on the minimal level of subject competency which is at least grade D in all subjects.
"For 2017, 293,514 (68.1%) candidates met the minimal level of subject competency, an increase of 1.6% compared to 2016 where 293,184 (66.5%) candidates made the grade," he said.
The report released by the ministry showed that students achieving all As in the country almost doubled with 8,958 candidates this year, compared to 4,896 candidates, last year.
According to the sports, physical and co-curriculum assessment, students will be evaluated based on their level of fitness through body mass index (BMI) readings, participation in sports as well as co-curriculum and extra co-curricular activities.
Classroom evaluation comprises assessment for learning; assessment as learning and assessment about learning using various instruments.
While psychometric evaluation would look at students' psychological traits, measuring their natural ability in several areas including music, visual space, verbal linguistics, naturalist leanings and mathematical logic.
A total of 443,794 candidates sat for the UPSR this year at 8,085 examination centres nationwide.
