Award-winning global education

HERIOT-WATT University received the inaugural title “International University of the Year” recently. The accolade was awarded by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, in recognition of its “#TrulyGlobal” presence referring to the university’s global outlook and its impact.
EXPANSIVE OUTLOOK
Heriot-Watt has a total of five global campuses located in the United Kingdom, Dubai and Malaysia.
The university also partners with other institutions of higher learning in 150 countries with more than 30,000 students around the globe.
In awarding the title to Heriot-Watt University, The Sunday Times Good University Guide editor Alastair McCall stated: “With high-quality, new campuses in Malaysia and Dubai, Heriot-Watt students have outstanding opportunities to study abroad as part of their degree, while the overseas campuses also provide openings for students to travel in the opposite direction and experience Edinburgh first-hand. More than most, Heriot-Watt has embraced the world view that marks out the finest higher education, making it our International University of the Year.”
LEARNING VIA DIVERSITY, INCLUSION
The recognition was celebrated at a special event held at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh graced the event with his presence. “I would like to take this opportunity to really congratulate Heriot-Watt University Malaysia for being nominated as International University of the Year by the Times,” the minister said.
“When I came here last year, there were only around 30 exchange students. This year we have 80. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is on the right track – and so is Malaysia – to becoming the regional hub for higher education with 200,000 foreign students by the year 2020,” added Idris.
During the event, a forum was held. Five international “transfer students” from abroad shared their experiences about living and studying in Malaysia.
They also broached issues on visa applications for international students and suggested ways and means they could approach it better.
TOWARDS GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Guests then congregated at the university’s “plaza” to witness the unfurling of a three-storey tall banner proclaiming the university’s latest achievement. The release of balloons by the higher education minister together with HWUM CEO and provost Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi followed.
“The Malaysia campus is five years old and you can see how much we are bringing into the country and integrating these international students, and giving them an amazing experience that they probably cannot get anywhere else,” said Mushtak.
“This is something that is in the DNA of Heriot-Watt. We make impact through our presence, through education,” he added.
To celebrate this momentous milestone and in staying true to its #TrulyGlobal nature, HWUM is offering a free two-week “Experience Edinburgh” study trip to its UK campus to students who enrol for its January 2018 intake.
However, the offer does not apply to students who sign up for the Petroleum Engineering programme as the campus does not offer this programme.
