KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Corporation Bhd (BCorp) contributed RM250,000 each to two organisations in support of their flood relief efforts in Penang, following the storm that wreaked havoc there earlier this month.
Its founder and executive chairman,Tan Sri Vincent Tan, presented the mock cheque to Mercy Malaysia and Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia, in a ceremony held at Berjaya Times Square Hotel.
Mercy Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus and Tzu Chi Malaysia deputy chief executive officer Sio Hee Kang were on hand to receive the contributions.
Also present was Tan's son and BCorp chief executive officer Datuk Seri Robin Tan.
Tan, who is also a member of Tzu Chi Malaysia, lauded the two organisations for their continuous effort in helping the Penang flood victims, saying today's contribution was appropriate to assist them in their efforts.
"I have a lot of respect for these two organisations. I thought it was only appropriate to give some contribution to them so they can continue to carry out their good work.
"I hope other Malaysians will also come out and help in whatever way possible, to assist the victims of the Penang floods," he said.
Tan, through his Better Malaysia Foundation and BCorp, has been supportive of the various charitable initiatives of Mercy Malaysia and Tzu Chi Malaysia over the years.
A total of RM4.45 million and RM3.15 million have been contributed to the two organisations respectively to date.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Faizal, in thanking Tan for the contribution, explained that Mercy Malaysia, among other things, focused their flood relief efforts on mobile clinics, and distributing non-food
items including hygiene kits and sanitation materials.
He said Mercy is also working with several agencies in Penang on conducting community preparedness programmes for the public.
Tzu Chi Malaysia commissioner Yeo Kar Peng said her organisation has given away cash cards to 5,531 affected families worth RM5.61 million, with each family receiving a minimum of RM1,000.
She said this was in addition to the group providing over 10,000 hot meals and drinking water to the victims, and cleaning up over 580 houses, schools, hospitals and roads, among other things.
Both groups said they would be fully prepped to assist in the event of a second wave of floods.
