KUALA LUMPUR: The administrators of primary schools in the country are advised to abide by a circular on the usage of workbooks, "Pekeliling Iktisas Bil 1/2000: Penggunaan Buku Kerja Di Sekolah Rendah," to ensure that teachers, parents and students are not burdened by it.
National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Tan Huat Hock said students were more interested in learning, and not only to excel in their examinations.
"Teachers also should not be burdened, by pushing them to complete the workbooks that it interferes with the learning method and process and at times, the quality of workbooks can be questioned," he said in a statement here today in support of a statement by deputy Education minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon.
Chong had said the ministry would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against school heads or teachers who failed to comply with the circular, adding that they also had no right for the students' parents or guardians to buy the work books.
Based on the circular, students at Level 1 (Year 1, 2 and 3) are not allowed to use work books because their Activity Exercise Books (BLA) have been provided by the Text Book Division of the Education Ministry.
As for students at Level 2 (Standard 4,5 and 6) only one work book title is allowed for each student for each of the KBSR subjects, such as Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris, Matematik, Sains, Bahasa Cina and Bahasa Tamil.
Apart from that, teachers are also not allowed to fully rely on work books when they teach in the classroom.
Tan said NUTP would assist the Education Ministry to ensure compliance with the circular, also for parents and students to not be burdened with buying the work books. — Bernama
