KLANG: More than 80% of Malaysians do not consume sufficient vegetables and fruits essential for a healthy diet. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the trend showed an unhealthy and worrying dietary style.
"This must be changed, otherwise it will increase the risk of diseases and affect the overall health system," he said after launching the Kem Nak Sihat 'Bersama Komuniti Kekal Sihat' (Creating a Healthy Community Together) at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Simpang Lima, here today.
Dr Subramaniam said Malaysians should eat more fruits to help reduce obesity and avoid lifestyle-related diseases.
In another development, he said the ministry, through the Nutrition Division would continue to work with the Education Ministry and the Parent-Teacher Association to expand the programme to increase understanding, especially among mothers of students on healthy food preparation practices.
"We want to give guidance to mothers on healthy eating practices because they are a powerful influence in bringing about the changes we expect. The programme began earlier this year and is hoped to be extended nationwide in the future," he said.
The 'Kem Nak Sihat' is an outreach programme specially designed for the community and aimed at delivering messages related to a healthy lifestyle. — Bernama
