BRT project cancelled due to overlap with LRT3: Nancy Shukri

KUALA LUMPUR: The government decided to cancel the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) development project because it may overlap with areas covered by the Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3).
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (BN-Batang Sadong) said the decision also took into consideration the long-term impact on public transportation users.
"The government has decided to cancel the BRT project earlier this month, this was made after a detailed study on the project and also other public infrastructure projects in the Greater Kuala Lumpur-Klang Valley (GKLKV).
"The BRT project will overlap with the proposed LRT3 project. The LRT will cover the Bandar Utama area up to Johan Setia in Klang through Glenmarie, Shah Alam and Bandar Klang.
"Thus, I would like to stress that this does not mean that the BRT would not have a positive impact, but the study finds that the LRT3 will have a greater impact compared to the BRT," Nancy said during the Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.
She was responding to Dr Ong Kian Ming's (DAP - Serdang) question on the cancellation of tender for the BRT project.
"Other than costs, we also took into account population density, the service line, economic activities in the line area and the number of passengers per hour, per direction."
Last week, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) announced the cancellation of the tender for the BRT project.
The BRT is a project under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and was originally expected to commence by the end of 2014.
