KLANG: The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has put in place several action plans in view of the possible high tide phenomena that is scheduled to hit several areas within the district next week.
For starters, council president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin revealed that six temporary flood relief centres have been set up in preparation for the high tide phenomenon scheduled to hit six areas in Klang on Dec 4 and 5.
"The six possible areas are Pengkalan Tok Muda, Batu 4 Jalan Kapar, Benteng Sementa, Port Klang, Jalan Pandamaran, and Taman Selat Damai.
"In view of this, the council has set up six relief centres - Dewan Orang Ramai Kg Sg Serdang, Sekolah Rendah Agama Sementa, Sekolah Rendah Agama Batu 4 at Jalan Kapar, Dewan MPK Kompleks Sukan Pandamaran, Dewan MPK Kg Idaman in Port Klang, and Dewan MPK Port Klang - in preparation for the phenomenon next week," Mohamad Yasid said during the council's monthly assembly today.
He added that according to the data obtained, the highest reading for the high tide that is scheduled to hit on Dec 4 is around 5.4m and it is expected to happen at 6.10am whereas the highest reading for the high tide on Dec 5 is also 5.4m and scheduled to be at 6.53am.
At the same time, Mohamad Yasid said the council has also allocated some RM250,000 to clean up all the 229 drains and trenches in Klang district to alleviate damage by the high tide as well as uncertain weather condition off late.
"The allocation is also in line with the recent directive by the Sultan of Selangor who urged all the Selangor local councils to review the conditions of all trenches and drains within their jurisdiction," he explained.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Yasid pointed out that the recent floods that hit Taman Sentosa and Bandar Putri was due to the upgrading works by the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage at Lembangan Sungai Aur which disrupted the river water flow.
He hoped that once the upgrading work is completed by next year, there will be less occurrences of flash floods in those areas.
