Dispatch rider gets four years jail, caning for stealing mobile phone

KUALA LUMPUR: A dispatch rider was sentenced to four years jail and one stroke of the cane by the sessions court, here today, for stealing a mobile phone belonging to a female tourist from Kazakhstan.
Judge Shamsudin Abdullah ordered Muhammad Ilham Noorazman, 27, who pleaded guilty, to start serving his prison sentence from the date of his arrest, last August 17.
Muhammad Ilham had snatched the Samsung Galaxy S7 worth RM1,686 belonging to Zarina Seidakhametova, 25, near The Garden North Tower building, Mid Valley, at 3.30pm, last Aug 14.
The charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code provides imprisonment of up to 14 years with fine or whipping upon conviction.
Earlier, Muhammad Ilham who was represented by S. Kartikeyan had pleaded for a minimum sentence on the grounds that he had regretted the crime and would not repeat the mistake.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurakmal Farhan Aziz urged for an appropriate sentence considering such cases were increasing and should be eradicated. — Bernama
