KUALA LUMPUR: Flood victims are urged to immediately register with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) once their homes are hit by floods, to enable aid distribution to be conducted promptly, the Dewan Negara was told today.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the registration could be conducted manually (writing their names in a register) at the evacuation centres or online.
"The flood victims are required to do early registration, and failing to do so will cause them to be not listed in the aid recipients list," he said in reply to Senator Wilfred Yong Chen Leong during the question-and-answer session.
Meanwhile, Shahidan said community rescue teams played an important role in providing initial assistance to flood victims while waiting for the arrival of other rescue teams at the locations.
"The community rescue team is made up of village headmen, village committee members and school teachers to assist in evacuating flood victims to evacuation centres. The team members will also inform Nadma and other agencies if they need further assistance, equipment and essential items for flood victims, such as boats and tents."
Shahidan said Nadma had also provided separate rooms and tents for women for their convenience in evacuation centres. — Bernama
