KUALA LUMPUR: The position of Umno Wanita chief, currently held by Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, should not be contested in the next party election.
Stating this, Sabah Wanita delegate Rahimah Asrah said she welcomed the suggestion by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein for the top two positions in Umno to be uncontested.
"We would like to propose for the Wanita chief post to remain uncontested as well," she said while debating the motion of politics at the Umno Wanita assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Rahimah also called for the party's top leadership to give consideration in fielding Shahrizat as one of the candidates in the 14th General Election.
She added that Shahrizat should also be appointed as a full minister based on her contribution to Umno and Barisan Nasional.
In another request to the party leadership, Rahimah asked for 30% women candidates to be fielded in Sabah in the next election.
"We appeal to the state and federal leadership to give proper consideration and add the number of (women) candidates that have the potential," she added.
She said the current leadership had shown its commitment to empowering women in the country, as could be seen in the government sector and government-linked companies.
