PETALING JAYA: Aireen Omar and Tharumalingam Kanagalingam have resigned as non-independent executive directors of AirAsia Bhd.
The low-cost carrier said the resignations from the board are to allow for more independent directors in order to enhance corporate governance and compliance.
“This is in accordance to the newly released Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance by the Securities Commission Malaysia. This move will also enable Aireen and Tharumalingam to focus on the transformation and ambitious growth plans for the company,” it said in a statement.
Despite relinquishing their board positions, both will retain their current executive positions. Aireen, 44 and Tharumalingam, 52, are serving as CEO and deputy group CEO of operations at AirAsia respectively.
Meanwhile, Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor has been appointed as an independent non-executive director. The 28-year-old entrepreneur is well-known for the Naelofar Hijab brand of headscarves which are sold in 37 countries and is reportedly on track to rake in RM200 million in sales this year.
AirAsia’s shares closed 3 sen or 0.94% higher at RM3.22 today, with a total of 15.36 million shares traded.
