PETALING JAYA: Senior Umno leaders have strongly denied that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had given free expensive watches to Umno delegates who attended the party's annual general meeting last week.
Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan told theSun that no such thing was given out after the AGM.
Pictures of Tissot watches with "Setia Kawan PM Najib" etched on the back of the watch and a likeness of the Prime Minister etched on the face of the watch had gone viral on the social media.
It was alleged that the Swiss manufactured watches were given as a gift to the delegates at the Umno AGM which ended last Saturday as a mark of their loyalty to Najib.
The party's Information Technology and Social Media Bureau chairman Datuk Ahmad Maslan said that he did not receive a Tissot watch from Najib last Saturday after the general assembly.
"The only so-called gift that I received was the musang king seed," he said jokingly.
The Umno supreme council member went on to say that none of the delegates received a watch as a gift from the party president.
"This is nothing new, there is a strong need to fight back against the spread of such lies on social media," Ahmad said.
The Pontian Member of Parliament urged social media users to check and verify whatever they receive on social media before forwarding it to others.
He pointed out that social media practitioners should think of the consequences before forwarding the news they receive.
Ahmad said those active on social media should check and verify news and information before accepting it as true.
