WWF's Earth Hour 2018 Night Walk to focus on climate change

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands of people are expected to participate in the Earth Hour Night Walk organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia.
It will be held for the fifth time in a row on March 24 next year.
The event, supported by the Penang government and Penang Island City Council (MBPP), was organised with the aim of working towards tackling climate change.
It will feature a 3.6-kilometre night walk at Lebuh Lintang next to the 1st Avenue Mall.
WWF-Malaysia Head of Policy and Climate Change Lavanya Rama Iyer said it is important to preserve and protect the natural ecosystems for future generations.
She said they were working against those who consumed natural resources too rapidly and in an uncontrolled manner.
She also stressed the importance of connecting millions of people in hundreds of countries to shine a light on an action plan as to arrest climate change, it requires a global effort.
"Remember, Earth Hour belongs to you. This is your planet," she told a press conference.

State Local Government, Flood and Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow praised WWF for initiating this event every year.
He said that the state was also taking steps to mitigate climate change through several pledges for Earth Hour.
Among them are for the state government agencies to be certified with carbon reporting by 2020, to achieve a 50% recycling rate by 2020, and to convert 20,000 units of street lights to LED lighting by 2020.
As of August this year, Penang has achieved 32.21% of its recycling rate target, which Chow described as an incredible success.
Chow also urged people to complement WWF's efforts by adopting less carbon-intensive lifestyles.

All participants will receive a T-shirt as well as a medal while funds raised will be channelled to WWF-Malaysia's conservation efforts.
