JPJ conducting road safety operation for holiday period

SHAH ALAM: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is currently conducting a nationwide check on errant motorists under Ops Patuh 2.
Its chief of enforcement (Selangor), Mohd Azlan Shah Othman, said that about 100 enforcement officers are on the ground daily.
"The main objective is to ensure safety for road users, especially during the holiday period.
"We are here also to see should motorists need assistance while they're travelling," he told the media, following an operation conducted along the North-South Highway and the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE).
He also urged motorists to be cautious and not use their mobile phones while driving.
"Under Rule 17a of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, the offence of using mobile phones while driving carries a RM300 compound," he said.
Other offences that carry the same compound, includes crossing double lines, not wearing a seatbelt, speeding and beating the traffic light.
"Those found driving on the emergency lane could face a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both," he added.
During today's operation, JPJ enforcement personnel issued summonses to motorists for traffic offenses, including those who were seen using their mobile phones.
