KUALA LUMPUR: After 15 years of service, veteran netball player Yap Sou Kuen has decided to call it a day and plans to take up coaching.
Yap and teammates helped Malaysia win the gold medal in netball at the 29th Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in Aug. It was her swansong.
"It (winning gold) was a very proud moment for us and also a personal achievement for me. I am waiting to take up a coaching course and after getting my certificate, chances will be brighter for me to become a coach," she told reporters after a "Meet-the-Fans" session at Stadium Juara, Bukit Jalil here today.
The sports officer at the National Sports Council said her decision to retire was because age had caught up with her (she is in he 30s) for top flight competition.
She added that the move would also pave the way for the juniors to move up the ranks.
For the record, Malaysia were also the champions at the Asian Championship 2016 di Bangkok, ending a 31-year drought for the title. — Bernama
