13 injured in crash involving factory bus, trailer truck (Updated)

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Twelve female factory workers from Perai escaped with only light injuries when their factory bus crashed into a trailer that was transporting scrap iron at Tingkat Perusahaan 6 in the Perai Industrial Zone.
The incident happened about 6.30am today when the bus, which was fetching the victims to their workplace, somehow crashed with the trailer at the scene.
Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid, who confirmed the incident, said that the accident happened at a junction.
Nik Ros Azhan said the bus was believed to have reached the junction of Tingkat Perusahaan 6 when suddenly, the trailer emerged from the left side and collided with the bus.
"The impact caused the bus to be dragged to the right of the road before it hit a concrete road divider and ground to a halt."
The 52-year old bus driver, from Permatang Pauh suffered a fracture in his left leg, while the 12 women endured superficial injuries such as cuts and bruises.
"All of them have been sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for medical treatment," he told reporters here.
Nik Ros Azhan said that the trailer's driver escaped hurt.
The police would investigate the case under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said that a team of eight firemen from the Perai Fire and Rescue station took almost 30 minutes to rescue the bus driver, who was pinned to his seat.
