PUTRAJAYA: The gruesome murder that took place at a petrol station in Johor Baru on Sunday night was due to a dispute between two underworld gangs.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the police have identified the victim - who was stabbed and run down twice by a white BMW - and the four suspects involved as being from two different gangs.
He added that the 44-year-old victim was a leader of one of the gangs.
"We are confident the incident was caused by a dispute between the two gangs. The police have identified the four suspects, and they will not get away with this," he told a press conference after attending the Home Ministry's monthly assembly, here, today.
Ahmad Zahid, however, did not disclose the nature of the dispute.
The Home Minister added that he expected a retaliation from the gang of the murdered man following the incident, but maintained that the police were prepared for any eventuality.
"The police will continue to take action against these underworld gangs, and we will ensure any illegal association that breaches our laws will face the consequences," he said.
In the 7.30pm incident, the victim had parked his car at the petrol station to check his tyres when the suspects, who arrived in another car, went up to him and immediately attacked him.
A video of the incident that went viral showed the suspects stabbing him, running him over with their car twice, before throwing firecrackers at the station.
On whether there were any other victims involved on the night of the incident, Ahmad Zahid said detailed information of the investigation was being prepared by Johor police chief Commissioner Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd.
"The investigation paper (IP) will be ready soon," he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid has invited opposition leaders to join the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to voice their disapproval against the Jerusalem move in a solidarity rally that would be held at the Putra Mosque here on Friday.
He said an invitation has been issued to the Pakatan Harapan leaders on Monday, as well as other NGOs, to join in the gathering to condemn the United States decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel.
"I hope this is not a forum to air their (opposition) political differences, but to show the manifestation of solidarity," he said, adding that BN component party leaders would also be present.
The gathering will kick off with a forum inside the mosque at 12pm, followed by the Friday prayers and a 'solat hajat'.
Leaders will then take the stage to give their speeches, with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak as the main speakers.
